Responsible Rabbitry
Thinking of getting one of those adorable baby bunnies from a pet store this Easter? Marcy Schaaf, aka the rabbit whisperer of Saveabunny.org, would like you to think again. According to the ASPCA, rabbits are the third most frequently euthanized animal in the country, and this is the time of year many of us are seduced into the why-not-bring-home-a-bunny mind-set. What people don’t realize about these pocket-size bundles-o’-fluff is they don’t use a litter box, their personalities are not yet formed and they have not gone through their one-year adolescence, during which, according to Schaaf, they can be just as rebellious and opinionated as a human teen. Since the life span of a healthy, well-cared-for, spayed or neutered bunny can be up to 13 years, she suggests finding one that is likely to be compatible with your family by adopting through her program. “It’s an easy process,” she says. “First fill out an online application, and then speak with one of our dedicated volunteers, who will work to match the personality of the bunny to the potential adoptee and foster the bunny for a while to see if it’s a fit.” Save a Bunny assists Northern California shelters with rescue efforts leading to the successful adoption of more than 300 domestic rabbits per year. saveabunny.org

Conversation Starter
Sue Glader’s children’s book Nowhere Hair, which explains to kids how to deal with a loved one’s cancer, has been getting national attention. The breast cancer survivor and Marin resident wrote the book to be a conversation starter between kids and adults, because, as she says, “the words are hard to find when you are in the midst of it all.” You can pick up a copy of the book at the Depot in Mill Valley and Book Passage in Corte Madera. nowherehair.com
