Get the Cover Look

When it comes to our fashion shoots, the hair and makeup can be just as important as the clothing in creating the final "look." For the March fashion shoot, we wanted to create a fresh spring style with beachy hair and glowing skin with a bright statement lip. Artist Elizabeth Chang used Smashbox makeup and Bumble and bumble hair products to create the look and shares how she did it all below.

For Makeup, I started with a clean face and made sure it's nicely hydrated and moisturized. Then I used Photo Finish Primer to prep the skin on the face, and Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer underneath the eyes. For the natural spring glow, I used one of my all time favorite products, Halo Highlighting Wand in Pearl on the cheek bones, a tiny touch on the bridge of nose, and cupid's bow. Next, I used a sheer application of Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation with a brush. While the foundation is wet, I swept a light touch of Soft Lights on the areas I've already applied the highlighting wand, and lightly applied the contour color around the face (I like the color products to set onto the foundation). Since our focus is the bold lip, I skipped the blush and powdered the face with loose powder where needed (t-zone, undereye) to set the makeup. Next I filled in her eyebrows where needed with little strokes, and set it in place with eyebrow gel. I applied a dash of matte and shimmery taupe colors from the Full Exposure palette to contour the eyes. For more subtle eyeliner, I like a soft dark brown pencil, like the Limitless Eyeliner in Java, to use in the inner rim of the eye and give definition without looking like you are wearing eyeliner. I curled her eyelashes, followed with a generous coat of Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara, and some individual faux lashes for a subtle oomph for the photo shoot.

Now comes our hero – the bold lip color that goes with the outfit palette. We chose to use this year's Pantone color of the year, Marsala, and all shades of the color.  For the photo shoot I mixed a few colors for the camera to show the color we wanted, but for day-to-day wear, Be Legendary Lipstick in Fig & True Red comes very close to the colors we used on set. The lipstick is carefully applied with a square lip brush for a precise application.

For Hair, I started with slightly damp hair. Use a generous dollop of Bumble and bumble's Thickening Full Form Mousse and make sure you cover all of your hair from root to end, and use a hair brush to distribute the product. Additionally, I spritz the Thickening Hair Spray at the roots because I wanted to thicken the roots for volume and texture. Next, I used a blow-dryer on high heat to set the product in, angling my brush to lift the roots while drying for extra texture and volume.  Because we wanted the hair to be dramatic to move with the clothes, I added in clip-on hair extensions for length. For the first look we went for a straight hair, so I flat ironed the ends, but the products worked to provide some texture and prevented the hair for falling perfectly straight and flat. For the next look, I curled the hair loosely with a clipless wand. To finish off, I used Dry Spun Finish for extra fullness and a matte look.
