Eyes On Hue

I don’t know about you, but I love looking through people’s things. Maybe it’s journalistic curiosity, maybe I’m just nosy, but you can bet I’m paying attention to the bottles and containers you keep in your bathroom if I’m at your house using it. And for you other curious folks out there, starting this Saturday you’ll be given a prime opportunity to do some investigating of your own when the San Francisco Decorator Showcase opens. Bucking the trend of previous years, where selected homes sat at Pacific Heights or Russian Hill or other aloft spots, this year’s home is in the Marina, across from the Marina Green.

Also notable is that the snooping is for a good cause. For the past 41 years, the San Francisco Decorator Showcase has raised nearly $16 million to benefit the San Francisco University High School financial aid program. This event allows hundreds of deserving Bay Area students access to a world-class college preparatory education.

There are 26 rooms to explore in this magnificent house, but here are the ones we recommend you don’t miss and may want to linger in a bit longer:

Grand Entry Hall

Molie Malone Interior Design

The entrance to a home sets the tone of what to expect, and this entry hall does not disappoint. Shimmering, gold tone silk walls provide drama while remaining inviting and beckoning guests to come in and explore.

Art Salon Dining Room

Bjorn Design

The beauty of the Marin Headlands, seen visibly from this room’s large picture window, providing both a natural backdrop and the inspiration for this room’s design. It is a sensory escape and the ideal place to display the owner’s art and collectible furniture.

Family Room/Kitchen and Breakfast Nook

Ian Stalling

This designer loves movies and was inspired by the whimsy of 1930s screwball romantic comedies to create these two modern, technicolor-bright, connected spaces. The nook invites the inhabitants to open the day with a leisurely breakfast, and end the day in an open seating area to tell stories of the day’s events before enjoying a good movie together.

Lemondrop Lullaby Bedroom

Dina Badman Interiors

Gender-neutral yellow and mint palettes — a nod to California’s lemon trees — serve as the basis for this sweet, elaborate nursery. Make sure to pay special attention to the intricate handpainted and sequin-embellished wallpaper, custom made for the room, with curtains made to match that blend in beautifully.

Tangerine Dream Lounge

Willem Racke and Susan Lind Chastain

If you’re a fan of creamsicles, you’ll love this adorable mid-century feel sitting room. The room’s centerpiece is a 1950s settee situated in front of a geometrically painted, art gallery-like orange-hued wall, giving the impression of both depth and space. Luxurious curtains made from alpaca in a cream and orange ombre pattern frame the windows and a Turkish rug from the 20s anchors the room.

The Terrace/A Room of Living

Mead Quin Design

This indoor living space with an outdoor extension is sure to be viewed as a central hub of the home. The interior, serene and simple living room is a place to retreat or gather with company, and was designed for collecting and displaying personal treasures and family portraits. On the terrace, discover a warm and inviting place to enjoy fresh air and sunshine, connect with nature and enjoy a glass of wine with friends on the surprisingly comfortable Galanter & Jones benches.

Ocean Retreat Bedroom

Eden Wright Design

This light-filled sanctuary with white linens, natural grass shades and woven fabrics has pops of ocean tones to compliment the view of the San Francisco Bay outside the window. The fresh, airy room creates a space for one’s imagination to run wild.
