Sausalito Art Festival Features Special Exhibit of Photography by Galen Rowell

Galen Rowell

For seven years now, the Sausalito Art Festival has sponsored a special Photography Gallery, offering exceptional work by fine photographers in a variety of genres.

This year’s Festival’s Photo Gallery will showcase the work of legendary mountaineer and photojournalist Galen Rowell, whose amazing landscapes document both his climbing adventures and his ability to capture the exquisite beauty of the earth’s wild places. They are simply stunning.

Recipient of the Ansel Adams Award in 1984 for his contribution to wilderness photography, Rowell (1940 – 2002) made numerous trips to many high-altitude destinations. Not surprisingly, the gallery features images from his many visits to the Sierras and other California terrain bathed in mountain light.

Bay Area born and bred, Rowell pioneered a special brand of participatory wilderness photography in which the photographer transcends being an observer with a camera to become an active participant in the image being photographed. Often made in the course of his climbing adventures, Rowell’s landscapes have a visual power derived from what he described as “a continuing pursuit in which the art becomes the adventure and the adventure becomes the art.”

During his lifetime, Rowell photographed and wrote major features for Life, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Outside and Time, and published a popular illustrated monthly column in Outdoor Photographer. He authored a total of 18 photo books including a number published in partnership with Sierra Club Books.

The Gallery will be open during the Festival from 10AM to 7PM on Saturday and Sunday August 30th and 31st and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, September 1st. If you are a fan of the great outdoors, especially the Sierras, it is not to be missed.

The curated color prints will be available for purchase, and the proceeds will go to support the ongoing non-profit work of the Art Festival Foundation. Photo scans and prints were provided by Mountain Light: Bishop, CA and the exhibit was curated by Art Festival Foundation Board Member Tony Cook.
