How to Best Enjoy Outside Lands

Tom Tomkinson

Planning to go to Outside Lands this year? With 74 bands on four stages in three days, let us help you simplify your music picks, what to wear as well as be prepared to load your wristbands with cash.

Alternative Music Picks

Office manger and music critic extraordinaire, Kirstie Martinelli, knows music. When Kirstie brought me to a tiny venue to see some kid named Hozier playing with James Bay last year (tickets were $20), I realized she knows music. While people like me (not as sophisticated) will be heading to the headliners, such as Elton John, The Black Keys and Mumford and Sons, Kirstie has hand selected her top picks offering a variety of folk, electric and indie bands.

Kirstie’s Top Weekend Picks

Friday

  1. Broods (Electronic Pop but sounds singer/songwriter-ish)
  2. Lake Street Dive (Alternative / Rock also sounds singer/songwriter-ish)
  3. The Revivalists (Roots Rock)
  4. Glass Animals (Indie / Electronic)
  5. Robert DeLong (Electronic)
  6. Chet Faker (Alternative)
  7. St. Vincent (Indie Rock)

Saturday

  1. Cold War Kids (Rock)
  2. Tame Impala (Psychedelic Pop)
  3. Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Psychedelic Pop)
  4. Misterwives (Indie Pop)
  5. Classixx (Electronic/Dance)
  6. Hurray for the Riff Raff (Indie Folk)
  7. Giraffage (Electronic – and my brother said they will be the best)

Sunday

  1. Shakey Graves (Singer/Songwriter)
  2. SZA (Alt. R&B)
  3. Ryn Weaver (Pop)
  4. Hot Chip (Indie / Dance)
  5. James Bay (Singer / Songwriter)
  6. The Devil Makes Three (Alternative Country)
  7. Givers (Indie Rock)

And equally as importantly, Kasia Pawlowska, our editorial assistant and resident hipster, brings in two very important things to consider; dressing for the weather and loading your wristband with money. And also stresses the need to see caribou.

First of All, Dressing for the Weather

  • Leave your heels at home for another day. Comfort rules here,
  • Bring layers, that wispy tank will not protect you from the fog.
  • Bring a backpack – and you’re in luck –they’re in fashion.
  • Bring a hat, you’ll need it in case the sun comes out.

Wristband Basics

This year’s Wine Lands will be using RFID-enabled (chip) wristbands and cashless payment technology to enhance your wine tasting experience! Your RFID-enabled wristband is the only method of payment accepted at Wine Lands, using Bison Bucks as the official currency ($1 USD = 1 Bison Buck). Create your cashless account online and ‘top-up’ with ‘Bison Bucks’ (the official Wine Lands currency) before you arrive – this will save you loads of time, so you can go straight to tasting at Wine Lands!

You can also add more funds to your account at a physical Top-up Station located at Wine Lands or through the mobile app. Once your account is topped-up, you’re ready to use your Bison Bucks to purchase a tasting or glass of wine at any Wine Lands vendor. The purchase amount will automatically be deducted from your account – it’s quick and easy!

It pays to top-up in advance! For every 75 Bison Bucks that is added to your cashless account before 10 a.m. PT on August 7th, Outside Lands will add 5 bonus Bison Bucks to your account just for topping up… which gives you an idea of expensive everything will be

Some of the wineries include:
