The Audubon Canyon Ranch is holding an open house August 6 for those interested in becoming a docent for an outdoor educational camp. This open house will give volunteers an overview of the 22-week education training program.
Audubon Canyon Ranch’s docent training program begins September 2014 and includes training on local birds, wildflowers, mammals, amphibians and more. Upon graduation, docents visit elementary school classrooms and lead small groups of students on trails at the preserve as part of Audubon Canyon Ranch’s Elementary School Environmental Program. This program provides nature education to thousands of schoolchildren each year for free.
“At the end of every hike, the kids are are so excited about everything they have seen and touched and learned. I always ask them what they will remember most,” says Beverlee Johnson, an Audubon Canyon Ranch docent for the last five years. “My favorite response? A 4th grader from Oakland replied, ‘thank you for showing me that nature is art.’ How could I not love being an ACR docent?”
