Celebrate Bastille Day
What is Bastille Day?
We’re not the only country that celebrates our independence. On July 14th, 1789, hundreds of Parisian revolutionaries stormed the Bastille prison, starting the democratic revolution in France and the collapse of the French monarchy. This day of rebellion, now known as Bastille Day, honors the national motto, “liberty, equality, fraternity," and is celebrated with fireworks, parades, and a great deal of national pride. Sounds a lot like our Fourth of July.
Luckily, you do not have to go to France to enjoy this holiday (falling on a Saturday this year). Party like a true personne française on Bastille Day 2018 right here in the Bay Area by attending one of our recommended events.
Left Bank Brasserie in Larkspur will host a lively Bastille Day celebration from July 13-15 with festive blue, blanc and rouge décor and live bands playing “la Musique de Paris”. Special menu items include Bouillabaisse, a Provençal seafood dish of red snapper, mussels, shrimp, and tomato broth, and Coq au Vin, wine-braised chicken served on button mushrooms and egg noodles.
For dessert, enjoy their Berry Millefeuille with tuile cookies layered with pastry cream, blueberries and raspberries. Expect fun, France-inspired cocktails like a Marie Antoinette with Sipsmith gin, lemon, and egg whites, a Sangre Royal with Basil Hayden's bourbon, and a King Louis with Courvoisier cognac, mint, lemon, and black tea. Vive la France!
All regular menu items will also be served throughout the celebration (prices exclude tax and gratuity). Get details here.

SF Embarcadero Bastille Day
San Francisco is hosting their 138th annual Bastille Day event on July 14th from 10am to 7pm. Open to everyone, this family-fun event offers free admission. National anthems and speeches will start at 5pm.
Enjoy live music and peruse the farmer market-esque booths filled with local French fare. With classics like crêpes and pastries, in addition to French-Mediterranean and California-French fusion food, you can dine like King Louis XVI himself. Wine and beer will also be available. Stick around for a Citroën vintage car show, tour SF’s French Quarter, or participate in the first ever SF “Course de Garçons de Café” (“The Coffee Boy’s Run”) — a race that originally challenged waitresses’ and waiters’ balance and speed. And don’t forget to try on French wigs from different eras at the Atelier Emmanuel booth!
