Sci-Fi Movie Night on Mt. Tam

There are some films that have it all. Excellent acting, action, suspense, a heart, and as a result are pretty much universally loved. When considering such films, one immediately comes to mind —Apollo 13. Released in the US on June 30, 1995,Apollo 13 was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In the end it won winning for Best Film Editing and Best Sound. Not only was the film was a huge financial success, grossing over $355 million worldwide during its theatrical releases, but it was also very positively received by critics. Director Ron Howard went to great lengths to create a technically accurate movie, employing NASA's technical assistance in astronaut and flight controller training for his cast, and obtaining permission to film scenes aboard a reduced gravity aircraft for realistic depiction of the "weightlessness" experienced by the astronauts in space. However, artistic license was also taken. Curious to find out what was fact and what was fiction? Come out and watch Apollo 13 under the stars in Cushing Amphitheater this Saturday and stick around after for an expose of “fake” science in the film by Jeffrey Silverman and Kishore Hari from Science vs. Cinema.

If You Go:

When: Saturday, July 27 from 7:30pm to 10:30pm
Where: Cushing Memorial Amphitheater, Mill Valley, CA 94941
