Bay to Breakers

Even though most of us currently view Bay to Breakers as a costumed and debaucherous stroll through San Francisco, the race’s roots are a lot more wholesome. Started in 1912, the event was created to enliven an earthquake wrecked city and to lift civic morale. Known back then as the Cross City Race it was a precursor to the world-class athletic events being planned for the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition. From that moment on Bay to Breakers has served as symbol of San Francisco’s uniqueness and perseverance. Now one of the largest foot races in the world with over 50,000 participants and 100,000 spectators annually, the event never fails to be an unforgettable spectacle from the sidelines or the course.
