Birthday Venues

Party Planner 101

Start here for your next birthday bash

By Austin Geidt

While some parks require someone (Dad) to get there at sunrise, with a cup of coffee and newspaper to stake out the prime tables, others allow reservations. Here are a few options recommended by local parents.

Belvedere Park
A great venue for toddlers on up. This neighborhood park is enclosed with only two exit points (gates), so the kids can roam safely. It’s got loads of play equipment for all ages including various structures and a sandpit. Parking is easy, but watch for signs for private parking on the streets, the residents will tow cars parked in front of their homes. Two picnic tables with great shade coverage. Restrooms on site (and clean!). 1505 Tiburon Blvd., (Tiburon) 415.435.4355, cityofbelvedere.org

Boyle Park
Squeezed between the tennis courts and baseball field, this large-ish, meandering park offers plenty of room for your children to go crazy. It includes nine picnic tables, four small barbeques and one large barbeque area. There are tennis courts (415.388.6523 to reserve), a baseball field, a creek, playgrounds, and lawn area. The park also has an electrical outlet for inflatable bouncers. Only one rental reservation is made per day. Plenty of shade. Easy parking as long as it’s not Little League season, (which is when groups are limited to 25 guests and under) on Saturdays. Restrooms on site. For groups up to 25, $35 residents/$45 non-residents. Prices vary for larger parties. 11 East Dr., (Mill Valley) 415.383.1370, cityofmillvalley.org

Gerstle Park
This park is centrally located in the Gerstle Park neighborhood and is large enough for children to run around and celebrate. It has a brand new multi-age playground, multiple picnic group areas with tables, barbeques, basketball and tennis courts. There’s tons of shade and restrooms on site. Cost: $55/day for one of two picnic areas (smaller includes 3 tables, one bbq, max. 24 people/larger area 6 tables and large grill, max. 36 people). San Rafael Ave. and Clark St., (San Rafael) 415.485.3333, gerstlepark.com
McNear’s Beach County Park
At the edge of San Pablo Bay in San Rafael, Mcnear’s is ideal for the multi-faceted group. The 55 acres include a swimming pool, tennis courts, a sandy beach, lawn areas, a snack bar, and fishing pier (currently closed). This is a great location for large groups. The beach itself is kid-friendly as the water is very calm. The picnic area has plenty of shade. Restrooms on site. Parking is $8/day in summer. Swimming pool fee $4/person. Reservation rates depend on which eight picnic areas reserved ($50-200). 201 Cantera Way, (San Rafael) 415.499.6387, co.marin.ca.us/

Old Mill Park
Located near downtown Mill Valley, Old Mill Park is set amid a beautiful redwood grove and includes an amphitheatre and the historic Reed Mill (oldest sawmill in California) in the heart of it. Towering redwoods offer plenty of shade, 8 picnic tables and 6 barbecue facilities, and restrooms. The park has playgrounds and play equipment throughout, and offers the perfect forest (shade on a hot day) setting to let the children create their own adventures. Parking is limited and no cars near picnic areas. Reservations required. For group up to 25, $35 residents/$45 non-residents. Prices vary for larger parties. Throckmorton Ave. & Old Mill St., (Mill Valley) 415.383.1370, cityofmillvalley.org

Miwok Park
Bordering the Museum of the American Indian is a 35-acre park. The park has an enormous lawn and beautiful redwood trees towering above. The playground is hovered by oak trees so there’s no shortage of shade. Be sure to bring a jacket as the sun can get lost amid the trees. There are picnic tables, a barbeque, hiking trails, horseshoes, and bocce ball.  Restrooms on site. Cost: $30/hr for residents, 10% additionally for non-residents. 2200 Novato Blvd., (Novato) 415.899.8200, cityofnovato.org
Pioneer Park
This park was resurrected in 2002 after a tree fell and destroyed a good portion of the park. Though not fenced in, the park has two excellent playgrounds resting on heaps of tanbark. The toddler playground has a sandpit with a neat little platform with a water spout for mixing and sending the mess down into little tunnels. Be sure to bring a change of clothes. A historic cemetery rests close by, which some parents find charming while others find slightly eerie. Within the parks rests a gazebo with picnic tables and a barbeque that can be reserved, tennis courts, and a well-tended lawn. Limited shade. Restrooms on site. Cost: $30/hr for residents, 10% additionally for non-residents. 1007 Simmons Ln., (Novato) 415.899.8200, cityofnovato.org
Eastwood Park
While some parks can get a bit overcrowded, this park offers the much-desired solitude that an intimate birthday gathering seeks. Its privacy is largely a result of its being nestled deep into the neighborhood, so make sure to have clear directions so as not to miss this much-adored spot. Be sure to bring sunscreen, as it can get a bit on the sunny side, though it is bordered with little areas of shade where the picnic tables and barbeques reside. The area is partially fenced. There are tennis and basketball courts close by. Portable toilets rest near the tennis courts. Northern Ave. & Eastwood Way, (Mill Valley) 415.388.6393, cityofmillvalley.org

Paradise Beach Park
Located on the east shore of the Tiburon Peninsula this park is popular and expansive venue for parties. The view overlooks the water to the East Bay, a horseshoe court, a sandy beach, and fishing pier. There are several different niches within the park, which can be viewed online for their availability. Park Rangers are known to be very pleasant and responsive to any needs. Plenty of picnic tables. Bathrooms on site. Reservations for picnic area recommended. Cost: $50 Mon.-Thurs., $100 Fri.-Sun. Parking fee: $8 (spring, summer)/$5 (fall, winter). 3450 Paradise Dr., (Tiburon) 415.499.6387, co.marin.ca.us

Peacock Park
This park has plenty of open space, two large playgrounds for different aged-youths, a fenced area for tots to roam freely, tennis courts, lots of grass and a barbeque pit with few tables. Hiking trails are close by in case you dare to go on a family adventure. Another plus in sunny San Rafael, is ample shade. Bathrooms are close by. Drinking fountains on site. Easy access and two parking lots. No reservations, it’s all first come, first serve. Peacock Drive, (San Rafael) 415.485.3377, cityofsanrafael.org
Piper Park
Located behind the police station in Larkspur, this park never seems to get too crowded, offering a peaceful place for you and your guests to share the fun. The weather tends to be better than in other areas of Marin. It’s not hard to find shade over the picnic tables. Permits are $35 per table for all day use. 250 Doherty Dr., (Larkspur) 415.927.5100, ci.larkspur.ca.us
Samuel P. Taylor
Located in West Marin, just past San Rafael, this wooded park is set amid beautiful redwoods, wildflowers and open grasslands. The park itself is huge (2882 acres). Facilities include picnic areas, restrooms, nature trails, barbeques, group camping, and a ranger station. It’s often quite shady and sometimes a little chilly, so bring a coat. Parking can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, but the park is absolutely enchanting. 8889 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., (Lagunitas) 415.488.9897, parks.ca.gov

Tween B-Day Party Ideas
They find the idea of a piñata mortifying, yet are simply too young to be let loose around the city. They haven’t yet (though they would like to think they have) morphed into the all too cool, “can-you-drop-me-off-around-the-corner” teenager fate has in store for them, but they’re no longer as easy to entertain as they once were. The “tween” years can leave parent’s scratching their heads in an attempt to pinpoint what an appropriate birthday party entails. Here are some ideas for staying attuned to your tweenie’s need to feel like an adult while still keeping their innocence and safety at the forefront:

Pack a lunch and have a picnic on the beach when you get there. The views are stunning. The trails are well marked and there are bathrooms located at the trail heads. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The girls are sure to feel a renewed sense of camaraderie after completing the mission and will get an awesome workout while doing it.
