18 Having survived not just one but two big-box bookstores moving into its territory, Corte Mardera’s Book Passage, founded (and still run) by Elaine and Bill Petrocelli in 1978, keeps turning the pages on its history. The book store–cum community gathering place–cum university of sorts hosts more than 700 author events a year, with speakers ranging from your neighbor (who just wrote her first children’s book) and front-line journalists to Nobel Prize winners and first-time novelists like the then-Senator Barack Obama (who back in 2006 netted the Marin Education Fund about $30,000 at one of his signings for Audacity of Hope). The classes, lectures and, oh yeah, book selection is just one more benefit of living in Marin. bookpassage.com
