Main Streets USA

64 It’s hard for most Marin residents to consider themselves suburban — mostly because each of the towns in our county has a unique and viable mini-downtown consisting of a pedestrian-friendly main street or town square. Mill Valley’s Depot Plaza, for instance, could be any remote mountain town USA. The foot traffic on Tiburon’s bustling Main Street and Sausalito’s busy Bridgeway expands and contracts with the crowds from the ferries. San Anselmo Avenue is home to burgers, bikes and the police station. Ross’s post office is the social hub for the small town, and on the way for coffee, one might catch a soccer or baseball game depending on the time of year. Fairfax and Bolinas shun labels as well as commercialism on their main streets — and most people in Marin applaud their soulful existence. Larkspur’s Magnolia Avenue attracts neighbors to its theaters and restaurants. Novato’s commercial Grant Avenue was until recently a safe place to bring your horse, and West Marin’s Point Reyes Station on a sunny day, cup of coffee in hand, is leisure heaven.
