Oldies but Goodies

Despite Marin’s overall perceived slow pace of development, some in our county still think things change way too fast. But as these three established restaurants prove, some things (fortunately) remain the same.

42  Marin Joe’s Inspired by the Original Joe’s in San Francisco’s Marina District, of which he was a partner, Adolph Della Santina opened his own joint, Marin Joe’s, in 1954 in Corte Madera. His nephew Romano became a part of the business in 1982, and they’ve been thriving ever since. Romano’s son Paul sums it all up nicely: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” marinjoesrestaurant.com

43  Rickey’s Restaurant and Bar For the tots splashing in the pool as their parents enjoy a cocktail, the fact that a Swiss hotelier/restaurateur spent $1 million in 1956 to refurbish the Novato property is lost on them. But cheers to John Rickey anyway for creating this family favorite enjoyed by young and old alike. rickeysrestaurant.com

44  Sam’s Anchor Cafe Few Marin residents would disagree that Sam’s expansive — and mostly sunny — deck has been the “gateway moment” for them. As in, “I could live here?” From breakfast until cocktail hour, this landmark has been a favorite for both locals and visitors since opening in the 1920s. samscafe.com
