60 Marin County is known for its wealthy residents, but what’s lesser known is the healthy amount of philanthropy here — and one organization stands out. Each year, nonprofits dealing with causes such as affordable housing, climate change, education, poverty, arts and immigrant integration are given a boost of about $50 million in grants from the Marin Community Foundation’s (MCF’s) $1 billion in assets. In addition, MCF supports in perpetuity three major projects established when the organization was formed: the Buck Institute for Age Research, which hopes to help us all live long, healthy lives (see number 68); the Buck Institute for Education, which seeks to improve the process of teaching and learning; and the Marin Institute, an alcohol industry watchdog. Indeed, the MCF seems to live by the slogan “it is better to give than to receive,” and Marin is certainly a better place for it. marincf.org
