Creating Change

We all mean well, right? But sometimes when we see someone less fortunate asking for change we ask, “Is this really helping?” Enter the purple meters installed by the Downtown Streets Team’s Put Your Change to Work program. The Downtown Streets Team, which helps homeless people get on track by offering them community work, has partnered with the City of San Rafael on this project. The meters, sponsored by individuals or companies, have nothing to do with parking — they allow people to use change or credit and debit cards to make donations to support the program, which assists participants with employment and basic needs stipends. In the past three years, the Downtown Streets Team has helped 67 team members obtain full-time jobs and gotten 37 into housing. Here are some other numbers on the Put Your Change to Work program.
