Broad Appeal

Nicasio’s bucolic reputation is about to get a high-speed makeover, thanks to a community fundraising effort. Marin’s first fiberoptic broadband network has broken ground and should supply service to residential customers by the end of 2017. The project comes from a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) fund that issues grants to build broadband networks in rural communities. Once environmental clearances are achieved, construction workers will connect into unused fiber-optic cables that were installed in 2014 to serve the Lucasfilm facilities in the Nicasio area. Nicasio School, the Nicasio Fire Department and other small businesses will also have a chance to benefit from the new broadband service. Here are some more numbers on the project.

220 HOMES
20-mile area
$994,000+ raised by residents
$2.5 million project
100% Fiber-Optic Connections

$89 service fee per month
