IN 1997, MADELEINE K. ALBRIGHT became the first female Secretary of State — the highest-ranking woman in the history of U.S. government at the time. Albright reinforced America’s alliances, advocated democracy and human rights and promoted American trade and business, labor and environmental standards abroad. In 2012 President Barack Obama awarded her the nation’s highest civilian honor, the U.S. Medal of Freedom.
