5 Best Things to Do This Week: Aug 12–18
This Thursday night market in downtown San Rafael features a mix of new and returning farmers and purveyors. Come dine al fresco or take home street style foods spanning the globe: Thai, Yucatan, Salvadoran and Spanish, to name a few, plus barbecue and Southern style foods.
Try Mexican-style local roasted corn, Madrid-style churros, or chicken and waffles and ice cream made using local farmers market fruits. Enjoy music, crafts, education, and children’s activities, and most of all – connect with your friends and neighbors. Stay and shop local businesses in Downtown, too.
Come out and celebrate Perry’s 50th anniversary! Festivities kick off Wednesday night, August 14 with an all-star lineup of celebrity and guest bartenders who will serve classic Perry’s cocktails nightly through Saturday, August 17. On Sunday, August 18, the celebration will culminate with a block party from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. on Union Street, between Buchanan and Laguna Streets. Open to the public, the block party will feature three live bands and signature Perry’s fare, cocktails, beer and wine. Perry’s will donate all proceeds from the block party to Make a Wish Greater Bay Area. Now in its 50th year on Union Street and a San Francisco Legacy Business, Perry’s has always been a community gathering place and remains an enormously popular San Francisco institution. The original location attracts multiple generations of Perry’s customers, who make themselves at home at the cozy neighborhood bar and restaurant and enjoy classic American food, a well-made drink and friendly conversation.
The Gravenstein Apple Fair is held under the shade of majestic oaks every August in Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol. There’s something for everyone this weekend including live music on two stages including Americana, world and zydeco acts; 30 of Sonoma County’s best food vendors; local wine, craft cider and microbrews; a children’s corner with arts & crafts, farm animals and a circus; DIY workshops, crafters, and an artisan tasting lounge.
Come hang out and celebrate longer days, warmer nights in San Francisco’s Mission District. Part street food festival, part concert, part local bazaar, for one true San Francisco summer day, this block party showcases the best of a micro-hood and all of its hidden flavors. Sasami, Speedy Ortiz, Alex Cameron and Roy Molloy and other acts will be taking the stage at this free festival.
The Big Picnic, a benefit and concert, closes out the 82nd season of the Stern Grove Festival with a free concert starring The Isley Brothers. With a career spanning more than six decades, The Isley Brothers made their mark on the R&B charts with the million-selling hit “Shout,” and the #1 R&B hit “Twist And Shout” (both songs were subsequently covered by The Beatles). Their 1969 hit “It’s Your Thing” cemented their fame, shooting to #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and selling more than five million copies. The song also earned a GRAMMY Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance.
