5 Best Things to do This Week: July 15–21
Theatergoers no longer have to fly to New York to get a taste of Broadway talent. In fact, all that’s required is a quick jaunt to Sonoma, where the stars dazzle both overhead and on the stage. Here, Broadway and film actors perform in the midst of open-air ruins in Jack London State Historic Park. The Fantastical Family Night shows are set to include music and dance including Disney favorites, special performances by the kids of Transcendence Kids Camp, pre-show adventures and more. The Fantastical Family Night events take place on Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20.
The Breastfest is back on the Fairground Island at the Marin Center this Saturday, July 20th from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sample beer from some of the very best breweries in California such as Marin Brewing Company, Moylan’s, Russian River Brewing, Drake’s Brewing Co., Cellarmaker and many more. Gems, crystals, and so on, surround us. They adorn our bodies, we collect them in video games, some purportedly have healing powers — if you believe that kind of thing — are highly coveted and generally come with a hefty price as a result. So whether you’re a fan of these multifaceted baubles or have a loved one who is, be smart and take advantage of the Gem Faire taking place this weekend. From Friday to Sunday at the Marin Center guests can find fine jewelry, precious and semi-precious gemstones, millions of beads, crystals, gold and silver, minerals and much more all at manufacturer’s prices. The event will be featuring over 70 exhibitors from around the world and the convenient bonus of having your jewelry repaired and cleaned while you shop. Guests will also have the chance to win door prizes each hour and those who bring a can of food to benefit SF-Marin Food Bank get in for free.
The music-loving family that has brought the world Hardly Strictly Bluegrass will join with friends for the Hellman Summer Stomp, an evening of excellent music, local fare and good times at Sweetwater Music Hall on Sunday, July 21, starting at 5:30 p.m. Featuring the Hellman Family Band and a host of special guest musicians, the Hellman Summer Stomp is an Americana celebration of summer. The Hellman family is beloved in the Bay Area for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a free annual concert started by patriarch Warren Hellman in 2001 as his gift to the city. The family members – most of the musicians in their own right – have formed their own bands and love playing their favorite genres of music. The Hellman Summer Stomp will feature the Hellman Family Band and many special guests, including musicians that have played with Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, The Waybacks, Poor Man’s Whisky, and more. Doors will open at 5:30 pm for a buffet of hearty nibbles for the first 100 guests.
