August marks Eric Zener’s third pool-themed cover for Marin Magazine. A psychology and sociology major at UC Santa Barbara, Zener went on to make his living as a painter and has done so for nearly 20 years. His advice to budding artists is simple: making a “career” out of art is about discipline and strategy. You need to always be an artist when you are creating, but it is a business when you are not. Allow for creative natural flow, but at the same time develop a recognizable style. Lastly, don’t take “rejection” personally. Timing and serendipity are everything. Be persistent and it will all come together.

What are you wearing? I am pretty much a jeans and T-shirt guy.

Where would you wear this outfit? Unless I have to get dressed up, pretty much everywhere.

Describe your personal style. Simple, clean aesthetic.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? I am so not a morning person. Once I fall out of bed, though, I can get out the door pretty fast.

Who are your fashion influences? I grew up on the beach so I still feel most comfortable in surf and skate wear.

Favorite designers? Huh…?

Where do you love to shop in Marin? Wherever my wife takes me.

Where do you like to eat in Marin? Fish,  Guaymas, at home with friends and family.

The blonde in the paintings—would you call her your muse? Most of the paintings are inspired by my amazing wife; however, it is my intention that the imagery reflect something about all of us. I hope that people can project themselves into the subject and identify themselves in the work.

Do you listen to any particular music when you paint? NPR and Radiohead top the list.

What’s your sport? Swimming and running.

What is always in your bag/pockets? iPhone and lunch money.

What is the single most essential piece in your wardrobe? Sunglasses.

What would you never be caught dead in? A dress.

What do you splurge on? Vacations.

What’s your fashion pet peeve? Trying too hard.

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought? Real estate in Marin!

Did it make you happy? Yes! Our family loves living here!

If your life were a movie, what would be your theme song? Just about anything from In Rainbows by Radiohead.
