Paddle Places in Marin: 101 Surf Sports

Finding accessible places to launch standup paddleboards, prone boards or even kayaks can be challenging, especially in Marin. It is important to know the difference between private and public launch sites as well as a safe entry into the water for your paddle craft.

In a continuing effort to find the most ideal and most beautiful paddling places, I recommend 101 Surf Sports in San Rafael. They are a standup paddle, kayak and surf sports store but welcome the public to launch from their docks on the San Rafael Creek.

101 Surfsports has a sizable dock right on the San Rafael Creek. San Rafael Creek has direct access to San Rafael Bay, which has many paddling options including a nice six-mile (round trip) paddle out to the Marin Islands. Or for those that want to stay in a calm and protected water, the one mile plus paddle from the dock at 101 Surf Sports to the entrance of San Rafael Bay is fun and scenic. The creek is a working boat channel, although the boat traffic is normally light, so it's important to be aware of the boats and stay out their way. Do keep an eye on the tides and wind in San Rafael Bay and San Rafael Creek. Like any location on the San Francisco Bay, conditions can change quickly.

Please note that Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s) are required by the local on-the-water law enforcement, which happens to be the San Rafael Police. You may launch at 101 Surf Sports only during their business hours, which can be found on their website. Street parking in front of the shop is preferred rather than in the 101 Surf Sports parking lot. Go in and say "hi" to the crew at 101 Surf Sports. They are more than happy to give you guidance on your paddle down the San Rafael Creek.

Paddle on.
