Support Your Local Small Businesses This Saturday

In what has become the trifecta of retail madness every November (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday & Cyber Monday) Small Business Saturday is the sanest in my mind. It is also a terrific opportunity to start your holiday shopping close to home and to support your local retail businesses who return so much to your local community. The economic pundits say that for every $100 spent at a small, local business (versus a big box store) $68 is returned to the community.

Small Business Saturday was a brilliant marketing ploy started in 2010 by American Express. (AMEX estimates that $14.3 billion was spent at small, independent businesses last year – small business does impact the economy!) In 2011 the shopping event was endorsed by federal, state and local governments and today is largely orchestrated by local community business groups.

So, be a socially conscious shopper –– stay local and shop local throughout Marin this Saturday –– support your local retailers. In Sausalito, where chain stores are not allowed, many of the small businesses and boutiques along Caledonia Street, Bridgeway and Princess Street will be offering specials and discounts. Katya (fused glass jewelry that almost every woman in Sausalito wears) and gr.Dano (a popular woman’s clothing boutique & design atelier – another favorite with the local ladies) will be offering 20% discounts, as well as refreshments and holiday treats. Both are on Caledonia Street – both are local artisans, featuring unique, local designs.

Shop hard, shop well and shop local. And then enjoy a beverage or meal at a local restaurant or bar!
